Erik Widmark

Erik Matteo Prochet Widmark (* 1889 in Helsingborg ; † 1945 ) was a Swedish chemist and professor at the Institute for Medicinal Chemistry at Lund University . In 1922 he developed a method for determining the blood alcohol concentration .

Widmark was the first scientist to systematically research the absorption , distribution and elimination of alcohol in the human body and to summarize his results in mathematical formulas ( Widmark formula ). Widmark was also one of the first to warn of the carcinogenic effects of fried foods. He became a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1938 . The International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) has been presenting the Widmark Award since 1965 for scientific achievements in the fields of alcohol, other drugs and traffic safety , etc. a. 1977 to the German Association against Alcohol and Drugs in Road Traffic .
