Ernie Chamberlain

Ernest Ernie Patrick Chamberlain is an Australian linguist , historian and brigadier general who has been retired since 1998.

Career

Chamberlain is a linguist for Vietnamese and can also make himself understood in Khmer . He was a soldier in the Australian Army for 36 years . He was involved in the evaluation of Vietnamese documents during the Vietnam War . From 1991 to 1993 he served as a Defense Attache in Phnom Penh and then in Jakarta . After his retirement he worked for the United Nations in East Timor from 1999 to 2006 and was, among other things, strategic advisor to Defense Minister Roque Rodrigues and Army Chief Taur Matan Ruak from 2004 to 2005 .

Chamberlain authored several books and articles on the political history of East Timor . He campaigned for an appreciation of the Timorese support for Australian troops in the Battle of Timor in World War II , but was unsuccessful.
