Ernst Christoph Helle

Ernst Christoph Helle (born August 9, 1759 in Neuhaldensleben ; † October 1, 1826 in Magdeburg ) was a German manufacturer, businessman and local politician.

Life

Helle was born as the son of the brewer Johann Gottlieb Helle . First he completed a commercial apprenticeship in Neuhaldensleben. After completing his apprenticeship, he went to Magdeburg and worked there in the Meitzendorf materials store . In 1783 he took over the business and married the daughter Johanna Katharina of the previous owner. However, in a fire in 1788, the shop was destroyed. He therefore became a partner of the businessman Stephan Reinhardt and founded a chicory factory with him .

Helle was also involved in local politics and especially socially. He became district poor director and from 1792 was a member of the poor wood supply society and was one of the heads of the St. Gertraud Hospital. In 1793 he became economic director of the city poor house. In 1804 Helle became co-head of the infirmary, later the St. Georgii Stift. In the same year he became a senior of the St. Johannis Church College and a Freemason in the Ferdinand Lodge for Bliss . In 1809 Helle became a member of the local council. In 1810 he became chief and colonel of the Magdeburg Civil Guard.

Helle conducted experiments on the production of sugar from sugar beet . Between 1811 and 1815, he and his business partner ran a sugar refinery under the Reinhardt & Helle company . In 1815 Helle became a member of the district committee of the Invalidenfonds and in 1817 of the alms college. From 1824 Helle was one of the heads of the Citizens Rescue Institute. When the Magdeburg corporation of merchants was founded in 1825, Helle was elected as a deputy to the college of elders.

At least in the 1810s and 1820s Helle lived at the address Kniehaueruferstraße 38 .
