Ernst Insam (born June 6, 1927 in Kitzbühel , † July 19, 2014 in Jochberg ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Ernst Insam went to Vienna in 1952 to study with Sergius Pauser at the Academy of Fine Arts and with Professors Schwarz and Herbert at the Academy of Applied Arts. Until about 1965 the artist was mainly active as a commercial artist. Insam initially designed posters for the Austrian Tobacco Directorate, banking and biochemistry, but also for international corporations such as Shell, Volvo, Philips and Sandoz.

In the mid-1960s, Insam turned back to painting. In doing so, he dealt with the problem of color with extraordinary vehemence, and in doing so came to results that identify him as an artist of particular independence. Insam has placed a strong emphasis on contemporary painting in Austria. Exhibitions to be highlighted: 1967 in the Vienna Secession, 1968 in the gallery on the Stubenbastei and in the exhibition rooms of the Citroen company in Vienna, 1969 in the Kurhaus in Kitzbühel and 1970 in the Stadtgalerie in Eisenstadt.

Insam's works include different art movements, ranging from tachism to naturalism , from sectional images to three-dimensional room design, with watercolor playing a particularly important role for him. Tirol often shapes its images as a winter sports country.

In the works of the seventies, Insam's works show a greater linearity, but also adopt an aggressive contrast of Pop Art. Insam's painting is also based on the nature of its spontaneous creation.

His connection to his hometown Kitzbühel was documented in 2004 with his participation in The Art of Tolerance , where he designed a Kitzbühel bear on the occasion of the United Buddy Bears exhibition , which accompanied the world tour in the following years and which was later auctioned for the benefit of UNICEF .
