Ernst Mielck

Ernst Leopold Christian Mielck (born October 24, 1877 in Vyborg , Viipuri in Finnish ; † October 22, 1899 in Locarno ) was a Finnish composer and pianist .

Life

Mielck came from an originally Lübeck merchant family who had lived in Wiborg for three generations. He was the son of the businessman Theodor Wilhelm Mielck (1854–1914) and his Finnish-Swedish wife Angelica Irene, nee. Fabritius (1857–1925) The parents' house was strongly culturally and musically oriented, so that the weak and sickly son Ernst from the start received his first piano lessons from Albert Tietze (only) at the age of 10. In 1891 he was sent to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin for further musical training . Here he was a student of Heinrich Ehrlich and Robert Radecke . He stayed in Berlin with interruptions until 1898; In 1893 he became a private student of Max Bruch , who spoke highly of him.

In 1894 Mielck made his debut as a pianist in Vyborg with the Piano Concerto in G minor by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , and in 1897 he also gave concerts in Helsinki , where his symphony in F minor, his most important work, was performed. His works were all created within just four years. His early death at the age of 22 - he died of tuberculosis in Locarno on Lake Maggiore - dashed all hopes that a composer of importance would develop here (as a counterpoint to Jean Sibelius ).

Musically, Mielck ties in with the great composers Beethoven , Brahms , Schumann and Mendelssohn in his symphony . The influence of the tonal language of his teacher Max Bruch is also unmistakable.
