Ernst Rasche (born November 24, 1926 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † February 4, 2018 there ) was a German sculptor and draftsman.

Live and act

Rasche served as a soldier in World War II , was seriously wounded there and was briefly a Soviet prisoner of war . From there he was able to flee and returned to Germany on foot within four weeks. In 1947 he began his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . His first studio was located at Ruhrstrasse 3 across from the house of his wife's family in the gallery courtyard, today's gallery on the Ruhr .

Rasche lived and worked in his hometown, his preferred subjects being sacred art and art in public spaces . Many of his works are scattered around the world, but most of them can be found in Mülheim an der Ruhr. His works can be found in public spaces in 140 locations in Germany.

Rasche has received several awards, for example in 1962 with the Ruhr Prize for Art and Science, which was awarded for the first time at the time, and in 1990 with the Order Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from Pope John Paul II for his work in the church . In 2011 the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr awarded him the Ring of Honor for his life's work.

In January 2017, the Mülheimer Kunstverein eV from 1956 honored the artist at the age of 90, who was the first chairman of the association from 1985–1986. The laudation was given by Gerhard Ribbrock, former employee of the museum management of the art city of Mülheim an der Ruhr. A large-format drawing by Ernst Rasche is in the collection of the KuMuMü - Kulturmuseum Mülheim in the Villa Schmitz-Scholl .

Ernst Rasche died on February 4, 2018. He was buried in the main cemetery in Mülheim an der Ruhr .
