First shoes are the first shoes a person wears in their life.

Since the child cannot yet walk, the practical use of first-time shoes is limited. But wealthy middle-class and noble families saw a status symbol in equipping their newborn offspring with complete clothing, for example on the occasion of baptism ; that also included shoes. First shoes were popularized in the 19th century. They could be stored and transformed into a personalized gift for the bride or groom on the occasion of the wedding by having them electroplated .
