Erwin Wortelkamp (2008)

Erwin Wortelkamp (born September 21, 1938 in Hamm / Sieg ) is a German sculptor and painter .

Life

The stages of his life reflect his desire for free, artistic creation and academic knowledge transfer: After studying at the Munich Art Academy from 1960 to 1965, Erwin Wortelkamp was an art teacher in Frankenthal for the next eight years . Close by, in Beindersheim , he founded and managed atelier nw 8 until he left in 1973 , which was then no longer viable without him. In 1973 he moved to the Freiburg University of Education as an assistant . In the winter semester 1982/83 he was visiting professor at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and again in the winter semester 1995/96 at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

In 1975 Erwin Wortelkamp moved to the Westerwald , bought the “old schoolhouse” in Hasselbach , set up his studio there and began to acquire meadows and pastures, in order to start in 1986 with the “ Im Tal ” facility . 40 sculptors have meanwhile integrated their work into the landscape in such a way that an eventful dialogue between the works of art has arisen and continues in the 10 hectare area. The “House for August Sander ” has awaited the visitor there since 1988 , where pictures by the photographer, who was born in the Westerwald, can be seen.

In the same year, Wortelkamp discovered his second residence in Acquaviva Picena, Italy ( Ascoli Piceno province ), a medieval place where all of his works have been created on paper ever since.

Wortelkamp's wanderlust has not impaired his twofold sedentariness. B. to Indonesia , Hong Kong , Bali , Jakarta , but also to Scandinavian countries and the Faroe Islands . In these places Erwin Wortelkamp let himself be temporarily or permanently involved with his work on the respective surroundings.

Since 1990, Wortelkamp has sought to deal with the environment, be it in the urban environment or in the countryside. In the 1970s, it was actions and objects that wanted to have a socio-political effect. B. denounced the inhospitable “public space” or turned against the contributions of “ art in architecture ”.

The “Im Tal” facility emerged from this attitude and it also shapes his endeavors to seek, find and create new locations for the sculptures that have been made in wood again since 1980. At his second home, Acquaviva, around 20 of his works were on view for six weeks in the little town, which is architecturally largely influenced by the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In Bamberg , too , almost 40 wooden and bronze sculptures were shown in squares and buildings in the historic old town.

His sculptures have a dominant effect in their surroundings and refer back to themselves and the viewer with all intended reciprocal references. Outside, most of the wooden objects are natural, weathered, often black; inside mostly whitewashed. His bronzes blend in more closely with the room, but are visually close to the wooden sculptures. There is always a noticeable interest in shaping space and surroundings.

Many of his works are exhibited in the Marienstatt Abbey and the private grammar school Marienstatt attached to the monastery , as he is on friendly terms with Abbot Andreas Range .

Erwin Wortelkamp was a member of the German Association of Artists . Between 1973 and 1984 he took part in a total of nine major annual exhibitions of the DKB, most recently in 1983/84 in the exhibition 80 Years of the German Artists Association in the Martin-Gropius-Bau and the National Gallery in Berlin.
