The Archdiocese of Birmingham ( Latin Archidioecesis Birminghamiensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Birmingham, UK .
history
The archdiocese has its origins in the from the already on January 30, 1688 Apostolic Vicariate of England founded the Apostolic Vicariate Midland District . After the Apostolic Vicariate Eastern District was separated from him in 1840 , his name changed to Apostolic Vicariate Central District . On September 29, 1850 - restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England - the diocese of Nottingham was established from parts of the area . At the same time there were also some areas for the establishment of the diocese of Shrewsbury and was raised to the diocese of Birmingham. As such, it was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Westminster as a suffragan , but then on October 28, 1911 itself became an archdiocese with the seat of a metropolitan , to which the two suffragan dioceses Clifton and Shrewsbury are assigned.
Today the area of the archbishopric includes the territories of Oxfordshire , Staffordshire , West Midlands , Warwickshire and Worcestershire .
