At the beginning of the 18th century there was a split between parts of the church oriented towards Rome and Constantinople, and against the will of Patriarch Jeremias III. New Year's Eve in Constantinople recognized Pope Benedict IV. Kyrillos VI. Tanas in 1729 as patriarch of Antioch. In 1881, the archdioceses of Bosra and Hauran were the Melkite Greek Catholic Church to archeparchy Bosra and Hauran based in the Assumption Cathedral of Chabab combined. The Greek Orthodox Church now had a competing Archdiocese of Bosra, located in as-Suwaida and named Archdiocese of Bosra, Hauran and Jabal al-Arab .
