The Archdiocese of Oviedo ( Latin Archidioecesis Ovetensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Spain with its seat in Oviedo .
history
The diocese was established in 811 . After the kings of Asturias moved their residence from Oviedo to León in 912 , the young diocese fell silent. But the beginning of the pilgrimages on the Way of St. James brought the city and the whole diocese of Oviedo a great economic, cultural and religious boom. During this time, many monasteries settled here.
The Reformation in the 16th century hardly affected the life of the diocese and the Tridentine reform movement within the Catholic Church also took many years to take root here.
The diocese was raised to the rank of archbishopric in 1954 and unites the dioceses of Astorga , León and Santander in its ecclesiastical province .
