Donkey Melkonian

Esegel Melkonian (born March 1, 1918 in Armenia , † June 12, 1976 in Hamburg ) was a stateless football player of Armenian descent. The offensive player played a total of 160 league games for Hamburger SV from 1935 to 1948, scoring 66 goals.

Career

Melkonian, who came to Hamburg at the age of two, was taken over for the 1935/36 season, like goalkeeper Walter Warning , from youth to the “Rothosen” league team in the Gauliga Nordmark . Under coach Hans Lang , the "Erich" or "Häsi" called offensive player made his debut on October 27, 1935 in a 2-2 draw against the Lübeck police in the Gauliga. He stormed right winger in the World Cup system at that time . At the end of the round, the “Rautträger” came out on top with the top performers Erwin Reinhardt , Friedo Dörfel , Richard Dörfel and Rudolf Noack behind Eimsbütteler TV and SC Victoria Hamburg the third rank.

In the 1937/38 season he won the championship in the Gauliga with HSV before ETV tied on points - both 41: 3 points each. In the final round of the German championship he was used for the first time in the games against Eintracht Frankfurt (5: 0) and Yorck-Boyen Insterburg (3: 1; one goal). The regular player on the right winger was Hans Sikorski . In defending his title in 1938/39, he played six games.

Since Melkonian, as a stateless person, did not have to take part in World War II as a soldier , he was one of the few regular HSV players who were continuously available during the war years. From a purely sporting point of view, the 1940/41 season turned out to be the “best season” for Hamburger SV. The “Rautträger” prevailed in the Nordmark division after 22 match days with 104: 25 goals and 44: 0 points, ten points ahead of runner-up Eimsbütteler TV. Melkonian had scored 14 goals in 20 league games. Due to the fact that regular players such as Walter Warning (goalkeeper), Erwin Seeler , Otto Rohwedder and goal scorer Werner Höffmann were prevented by soldiers , HSV had to increasingly rely on “young players” such as Herbert Feltz, Erwin Kubale, Karl Schicker (goalkeeper) and Walter Staats. A total of 29 footballers were used in the league series. Captain Eugen Kahl (21), Heinz bung bottle , Friedo Dörfel and "Erich" Melkonian with 20 games each topped the list.

In both games won against the runner-up ETV - on December 1, 1940 (3: 1) and on February 16, 1941 (4: 1) - Melkonian stormed the right wing. In the final round of the German football championship he came in the games against VfB Königsberg (3: 1), 1. SV Jena (2: 1, 2: 2) and in the deciding second leg on May 25, 1941 the subgroup winners against FC Schalke 04 ( 1: 0) used. In the offensive line-up with Melkonian, Herbert Feltz, Werner Höffmann, Heinz Spundzeile and Gustav Carstens , the Hamburg team faced the Schalke defensive around Hans Klodt (goalkeeper), Hans Bornemann and Otto Schweisfurth (defender couple ) and the runner series with Bernhard Füller , Otto Tibulski and Rudolf Gellesch . The 3-0 defeat in the first leg on May 18 at the Rote Erde stadium in Dortmund could not be made good.

As a special feature, the 22nd league game against the Barmbeck SG went down in (football) history books. Due to scheduling issues, it did not take place until a year later, on March 22, 1942; HSV won 6-2 goals and "Melko" distinguished himself as a two-time goalscorer on Easter Sunday 1942.

In the further rounds of the war from 1941/42 to 1944/45 - from 1942/43 as Gauklasse Hamburg - Melkonian, who came from a family of Armenian descent, belonged to the regular cast of the "Rothosen". From October 6, 1940 to November 15, 1942 - it was the final in Essen against the representation of the Lower Rhine in the Reichsbund Cup - he also played six games in the Nordmark district selection.

After the end of the Second World War, the team-friendly, but at the same time dangerous goal striker was active until the first season of the North Football League, 1947/48, at Hamburger SV. The Armenian played his last two league games on January 4 and 11, 1948 in the Oberliga Nord against VfB Lübeck (4-0) and Werder Bremen (2-2) on the left wing. In the draw against Bremen, the HSV attack consisted of Edmund Adamkiewicz , Heinz Trenkel , Alfred Boller , Heinz Bung bottle and "Erich" Melkonian. In the summer of 1948 the excellent table tennis player ended his career as a league footballer and took it easy with the old men .

After a break of more than six years, the 36-year-old helped HSV on June 9, 1954 as a result of a personnel shortage in a cup game against Eimsbütteler SV (not ETV) on the right wing at the side of Günter Schlegel , Werner Harden and Herbert Wojtkowiak .

Melkonian died on June 12, 1976 on the tennis court in a club competition of the TTC Horn-Hamm, of which he was chairman.
