Eskişehir ( Turkish for "old city" , the original name in antiquity and Byzantium was Δορύλαιον Eskisehir , German formerly Eski-Schehir ) with 685,727 inhabitants (2013) one of the largest cities in Anatolia of and the capital of the same province.
The area around Eskişehir is mainly known for the mining of sepiolite (Lületaş) . In the city center there are numerous shops that sell meerschaum pipes , which have been carved here since 1700.
history
The city of Eskişehir was founded in the first millennium BC. Founded on the Porsuk river by the Phrygians and is located at one of the most important crossings of Anatolia . It has a long Hittite , Phrygian , Roman , Byzantine and Ottoman history.
In 1097 the Crusaders and Seljuks fought against each other in the Battle of Dorylaeum . In recent times, many Tatars have been settled. In the Turkish War of Liberation in 1918 there were some skirmishes around the city. In 1980 the politician and bureaucrat Gün Sazak was killed in Eskişehir ; this led to unrest and the Çorum pogrom .

Eskişehir is characterized by a continental climate with cold, snowy winters (average temperature ~ 0 ° C) and hot, dry summers (average temperature ~ 22 ° C). Rain falls all year round, but a pronounced dry phase can be observed in the summer months. According to Köppen , the location can be described as a semi-arid steppe climate (BSk).

Eskişehir is located on the Anatolian Railway and the largely parallel high-speed line Ankara – İstanbul , about halfway between Istanbul and Ankara. Of the structurally demanding path ( loop tunnel Bilecik ) next track branches here to Ankara and Afyonkarahisar .
A serious railway accident occurred here on October 31, 1972 : a passenger train and a freight train collided, several cars fell down a slope and caught fire. More than 30 people died and 50 more were injured.
Eskişehir has had a narrow-gauge modern tram , the EsTram, since 2004 . Right now (2018) there are seven, with modern low-floor - railcars operated lines in operation:
Street
In contrast to most other Turkish cities, the traffic pressure was not countered with further road, intersection and underpass expansion, but instead focused on a more pedestrian-friendly design, especially in the inner city . The city is home to Anadolu University and Osmangazi University with a total of over 70,000 students.
According to an agency report dated April 6, 2018, a researcher at Osmangazi University killed a faculty head and 3 other teachers in a shootout in the building of the educational faculty .
