Esther Dischereit (2014)

Esther Dischereit (born on April 23, 1952 in Heppenheim , Bergstrasse ) is a poet, essayist, narrator as well as a theater and radio play author. She is received as an important voice of the second generation after the Holocaust. From 2012 to 2017 Esther Dischereit taught as a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Life

Esther Dischereit was born in Hessen in 1952. She worked in the metal industry and as a typesetter, and since 1985 she has worked as a writer and journalist. In 1988 a collaboration began with various musicians, including Ray Kaczynski , Friedemann Graef , Rüdiger Carl , Johannes Niebergall, Bülent Ates, Rajesh Mehta and Tonbüro Berlin et al. In 1991 Esther Dischereit founded the label wordmusic together with Ray Kaczynski, with which she merged her rhythmic pieces of speech with musical elements.

Esther Dischereit has received numerous German and international grants since 1988, for example she was a fellow at the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies in Potsdam in 1995.

From 1996 she gave guest lectures at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Washington University of St. Louis, Cornell University, Ithaca, MIT, Boston, University of California, Berkeley, Princeton University and the like. a. in USA and Canada. Dischereit made further lecture and reading trips from 1993 onwards at the invitation of various Goethe Institutes and universities to the USA, to Medellín / Colombia and to European countries. Until 1994 she was a union officer for ÖTV and from 2001 to 2006 she was a curator for the German Trade Union Federation Berlin: contemporary art / new media at the DGB (cultural representative in the DGB district Berlin Brandenburg), which resigned her because of alleged austerity measures (cultural and anti-racism work should be dropped) , against which she successfully proceeded in a process including appeal process. There were also public protests in 2006 in connection with the dismissal from her job.

Further interdisciplinary collaborations with the dancer and choreographer Holly Handman-Lopez (Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, Miller Theater, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York) for the piece Before the High Holidays there was a whisper and rustle in the house . Esther Dischereit presents her book Flowers for Otello (2014) together with the German-Turkish musician and DJane Ipek Ipekcioglu at bilingual readings.

Dischereit has lived in Berlin since 1989 and in Vienna since 2012.

Esther Dischereit was an observer of the NSU investigative committee of the German Bundestag from 2012 to 2013.

Between 2012 and 2017, Esther Dischereit was professor for language art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Honors

2014 Invitation to Das Blaue Sofa at the Leipzig Book Fair with the book Flowers for Otello . In 2009 Esther Dischereit received the Erich Fried Prize in Vienna. In 2008 Esther Dischereit won the tender for an acoustic Holocaust memorial for the city of Dülmen in Westphalia.
