Ethanolate ion

Ethanolates (also ethoxides , outdated ethylates ) are salts of metal - cation and Ethanolat- anions . The ethanolate ion is formed formally from ethanol by deprotonation . The molecular formula of the ethanolate ion is C 2 H 5 O - . Ethanolates belong to the group of alcoholates . They react violently with water, forming an alkaline solution and ethanol:

For example, potassium ethanolate can be synthesized from ethanol and potassium :

Ethanolates should not be confused with methanolates. The latter are derived from methanol .
