The Euregio Egrensis is a European region in Central Europe . It was founded in 1993 for cross-border cooperation between Germany and the Czech Republic . The region comprises eastern Upper Franconia, northern Upper Palatinate in Bavaria, the Vogtland and Western Ore Mountains in Saxony, south-eastern districts in Thuringia and north-western districts in Bohemia. Egrensis is the Latin adjective for Egra, the Latin variant of the name of the city of Eger , which is located in the center of the Euregio.

history

The first idea to set up a forum to coordinate and support future cross-border activities at local and regional level came up in 1989. The proposal to found a Euregio was made in 1990 at a conference in Marktredwitz . Contact offices were opened in 1991 and the necessary support associations were founded in 1992. In 1993 the joint agreement for the establishment of the Euregio Egrensis was signed and the European region was founded. Today the area of ​​the Euregio Egrensis covers an area of ​​around 17,000 km² with around two million inhabitants.

Objectives of the region

Euregio Egrensis is supposed to eliminate the negative impact of state borders, improve the standard of living of the inhabitants as well as the natural and cultural-political conditions and develop the economic potential in the region through targeted cooperative relationships.

The European region is made up of three working groups. They each send three representatives and a managing director to the joint presidium. The joint president is alternately elected from the three working groups for two years.

In the working group Saxony / Thuringia e. V. the Vogtlandkreis , Plauen , the Erzgebirgskreis , the Landkreis Greiz and the Saale-Orla-Kreis are active. The districts of Kronach , Hof , Kulmbach , Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge , Bayreuth , Tirschenreuth , Neustadt an der Waldnaab , Amberg-Sulzbach and Schwandorf as well as Hof , Bayreuth , Amberg and Weiden in the Upper Palatinate are members of the Bavarian Working Group . The Czech members are organized in the Bohemia Working Group. These are Okres Karlovy Vary , Okres Tachov , Okres Cheb and Okres Sokolov .

Fields of work

Each working group works on a main topic for the entire area of ​​the Euregio. The so-called "language offensive", which aims to improve knowledge of the Czech and German in the border region, is led by the Bavarian Working Group. The focus on traffic and infrastructure is part of the Saxony / Thuringia Working Group, while the focus on spa and swimming pools and tourism is part of the Bohemia Working Group.

In addition to major projects in the field of transport infrastructure and tourism promotion, many projects are taking place that are intended to promote international understanding. This includes annual youth camps, school partnerships and exchange programs.
