The Europe Publishing is a book publisher based in Munich . There are branches in Berlin and Vienna . With effect from December 1, 2015, he took over the Swiss publisher of the same name, Europa-Verlag Aktiengesellschaft , based in Zurich .
history
The publishing house was founded by Emil Oprecht in Switzerland in 1933 to provide a forum for persecuted authors and banned manuscripts. During the Nazi era, the publisher was known as an “emigrant publisher”. Europa Verlag was also one of the most important theater publishers of the time. Emil Oprecht is one of the legendary publishers of the last century who remained upright in the daily struggle for the support of the persecuted, against increasing pressure from Swiss censorship and against all economic resistance. In the half century of the existence of his publisher, the program focused on authors and books who stood up for human dignity and freedom.
Even in the 80th year of its existence in 2013, the Zurich-based Europa Verlag is still partly the publisher of authors of emigration and the fight against fascism such as Luigi Bartolini , Willy Brandt , Arthur Koestler , Carlo Levi , Curt Riess , Bertrand Russell . Modern authors include Andreas Gross , Rainer Gross , Robert Parker and Angelika Waldis .
In 2015 Europa Verlag Munich and Berlin took over Europa Verlag Zurich.
The Viennese daughter
The sister publisher founded by Oprecht in Vienna in 1946, which presented its first program in 1947, also saw it as its task to follow the tradition established in Zurich and 'to be a platform in the struggle for the European spirit and humanitarian sentiment'. In 1953, the year after Oprecht's death, the Viennese company went to the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions , which continued the work of Arthur Koestler , discovered Manès Sperber and published a general program of fiction and non-fiction. Forty years later, in 1993, the Wiener Verlag was shut down, the Europa Verlag became the property of Otto Wolff von Amerongen and Sal. Oppenheim and moved to Munich, then later, after being acquired by Senator Entertainment AG, to Hamburg. In 2005 the publishing activities were temporarily suspended.
In 2012 Europa Verlag was taken over by the German publisher Christian Strasser and the headquarters relocated to Munich. Since then it has operated as Europa Verlag Berlin .
In 2015 Europa Verlag Munich and Berlin took over Europa Verlag Zurich. The Berlin Golkonda publishing house has also been part of Europa Verlag since April 2017 .
