European Cup Winners' Cup 1961/62

The 1962/63 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the third draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 25 club teams from 24 countries took part, including defending champions Atlético Madrid , 20 reigning cup winners and three defeated cup finalists (Vitória Setúbal, FC Portadown and the Grazer AK). Hungary sent the Újpesti Dózsa SC again the runner-up, as there was a national cup competition only from 1964.

From Germany the DFB Cup winner 1. FC Nürnberg , from the GDR the FDGB Cup winner SC Chemie Halle , from Austria the finalist of the ÖFB Cup Grazer AK and from Switzerland Lausanne-Sports were at the start.

Tottenham Hotspur won the final on May 15, 1963 in De Kuip of Rotterdam 5-1 against defending champions Atlético Madrid. Tottenham became the first British club to win a European Cup title.

The top scorers were Georgi Asparuchow from DNA Plovdiv and Jimmy Greaves from Spurs with six goals each.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after extra time in the second leg, a playoff was played on a neutral pitch. The away goals rule did not yet apply. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. However, if the score was tied after extra time, a replay would have been scheduled because a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned.
