Europe '72 is a live album consisting of three LPs by the band Grateful Dead .

history

The album was created during a tour through Western Europe in the spring of 1972. In addition to five studio albums, Europe '72 is the third live album of the band, which was best known for their live shows. In addition to songs that were already heard on the previous studio albums, material was used that was recorded for the first time.

The band stayed true to their style, largely playing a mix of American bluegrass , folk , folk rock and country , with which they celebrated their greatest successes.

In addition to songs that reflect a typical American image, such as Jack Straw , Cumberland Blues and Tennessee Jed , Truckin from the album American Beauty was also part of the tour's live repertoire, with which the band had their first big hit at the time.

In addition to such typical folk songs, (Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew from the debut album The Grateful Dead was also on the setlist. This song was originally recorded by Bonnie Dobson in 1962 and is often referred to as an " apocalyptic " folk rock song. It is based on the film The Last Shore from 1959.

The well-known medley from China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider (more likely to be attributed to Psychedelic Rock ) was musically reinterpreted on the tour and adapted to the other songs.

The covers of the LPs were developed by the American artists Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse , who were then part of psychedelic art . Among other things, Kelley drew posters by Jack Kerouac , the proceeds of which went to the Jan Kerouac Foundation.

The album and thus the tour was the last with Ron McKernan as an active member, as he died of gastric bleeding after the tour in March 1973 at the age of 27 . In return, this was the first album with the couple Keith and Donna Godchaux , who were supposed to relieve the sick McKernan. The couple were members of the band until 1979 before they left the band due to personal differences.

In 1995, the three LPs were re-released as a double CD, before a revised version of the 17 songs and eight more for the box set The Golden Road (1965–1973) was brought onto the market by Rhino Records in 2001 .

Three single LPs were released from the album: One More Saturday Night / Bertha , Johnny B. Goode / Truckin and Sugar Magnolia / Mr. Charlie , the latter being the most successful.

Al Franken , an avowed deadhead , named a comedy after One More Saturday Night . Bill Walton , also Deadfan, gave his radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio the same name. Bruce Springsteen covered these songs at some of his concerts.

Europe '72 is the band's most successful live album and one of the best-selling albums.

successes

In the Billboard charts , the album reached number 24 and the single Sugar Magnolia number 91.

On December 14, 1972 the album reached gold status , on August 24, 2001 double platinum status in the United States .
