The Evangelical Cemetery Kempten is located in Kempten (Allgäu) on the western slope of the Burghalde . The sponsor is the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Kempten (Allgäu) , the administration is carried out by the parish office of Kempten (Allgäu) .

Emergence

The present site has been owned by the imperial city since 1379. For a long time it was used as an orchard and zoo. In 1527 the imperial city of Kempten joined the Reformation . In 1535 the cemetery was abandoned due to lack of space in the church district of St. Mang's Church and Erasmus Chapel, but there were tombs there until around 1600. The cemetery was built on the slope of the Burghalde from 1553. In 1563 it was walled, which rests on a late Roman city wall in the west. In 1839 the construction of the chapel, consecrated in 1841, began in neo-Romanesque forms. In 1905 there was an extension to the north. The urn hall was completed in 1936.

Buried personalities

The physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer (1940–1995) is buried in the cemetery under the Burghalde . The cemetery also houses the graves of numerous well-known personalities from Kempten, such as those of Alfred Weitnauer , Rudolf Zorn , Max Förderreuther and Christian Marco Calgèer as well as the grave of the architects Heydecker (east) and the grave of the Schnetzer family. The oldest gravestones date from the 18th century, e.g. B. the patrician family Jenisch-Fischer .
