The Evangelical Gymnasium Meiningen (EVG Meiningen) is a state-recognized high school in Meiningen sponsored by the Evangelical School Foundation in Central Germany of the EKD . The grammar school is one of two grammar schools in the southern Thuringian district town and is housed in two buildings, including the listed building of the former secondary school.

Parents from Meiningen and the surrounding area who wanted an alternative to the state grammar school founded the "Association for the establishment and promotion of an independent grammar school in Meiningen eV" in 2008. Brügmann Consulting from Leipzig prepared a “feasibility study for the construction of a private high school in the city of Meiningen” with a positive result. On March 23, 2009, the association signed a cooperation agreement with the Evangelical School Foundation in Central Germany to set up a privately owned grammar school in Meiningen. School operations began in the 2010/11 school year with two 5th grades and 35 students.

Until 2012, due to the lack of a suitable Meiningen school building, the grammar school was in some classrooms of the vocational training and technology center Kloster-Rohr in the neighboring municipality of Rohr . Due to a lack of space and the parents' desire to use the better urban infrastructure in the city of Meiningen, such as transport links and cultural facilities, the grammar school moved into the now vacant building of the former Meiningen grammar school at the beginning of the 2012/13 school year. The grammar school receives support with financing, public relations, parents' evenings and other areas from the association for the promotion of a privately owned grammar school in Meiningen eV

school-building

The listed school building was built in 1877 by the architect Otto Hoppe for the scientific and technical "Herzogliche Realgymnasium Meiningen ", which was founded in 1838 on the initiative of Duke Bernhard II (Saxony-Meiningen) and the Meiningen state parliament as an alternative to the humanistic grammar school Bernhardinum . During the First World War the school house served as a hospital and the students were distributed to several alternative quarters in other schools.

The house was badly damaged in an American air raid on February 23, 1945, and 25 students and teachers were killed. A memorial plaque commemorates this event with the following text: "In memory of the school members who lost their lives in a bomb hit on this school building on February 23, 1945. Meiningen, February 2018. Evangelisches Gymnasium and EVG support association".

After the Second World War, the building was used as a primary school. From 1959 to 1993 the school house housed the ten-class “Friedrich Schiller” (FSOS) polytechnic high school . In the early 1970s, the school received its own school sports hall. The Pestalozzi School moved in here in 1993 and stayed until 2011.

The building, which is popularly known as the “Red School” because of the red bricks , has been the home of the Evangelical Gymnasium Meiningen since 2012 . In 2014/15, a new building was built on the school premises to accommodate additional classrooms due to the expected future number of around 400 students. The old building was completely renovated and modernized from 2015 to 2017. Another building for the auditorium and cafeteria is planned for 2019.

School life

As an all-day school, the Evangelical Gymnasium offers various working groups. The school newspaper and the school choir are also organized as part of these measures.

The regularly repeated events at EVG Meiningen include the Christmas market organized by the student council and the musical evening in the Meiningen State Theater .

The church school authorities make themselves noticeable in everyday life through various forms of devotion. In addition to the services held in the town church, which take place on the occasion of Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter, the grammar school organizes a monthly school devotion in which all students take part. In addition, there is a short prayer in the class group on the Monday of each week in the first lesson.

As a school of the Evangelical School Foundation for Central Germany, EVG Meiningen participates in their student representatives forum. Two student representatives were honored for their commitment at the foundation reception in 2017.

The Evangelical Gymnasium Meiningen is involved in the social life of the city of Meiningen in different ways. In addition to the location close to the city center, this is reflected, among other things, in the involvement of the school choir in performances by the Meininger Theater and the participation of school and student representatives in city events, markets and commemorations.
