Evaristo de Macedo Filho (born June 22, 1933 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a former Brazilian football player and coach.
Career
player
Evaristo originally played for Madureira EC in the north of Rio before moving to the top club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro in 1953 . With the club he won the state championship of Rio de Janeiro three times in a row from 1953 to 1956 and the championship of the state champions of Rio and São Paulo in 1956.
In 1952 he was part of the Brazilian squad at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, which were eliminated in the quarterfinals 2-4 after extra time against Germany. From 1955 to 1957 he also played 14 games for the Brazilian national team , scoring eight goals. In March 1957 he scored five goals at the South American Championships in Lima, Peru , in a 9-0 win against Colombia - so far the most goals by a player in a game for Brazil. In the end, Brazil finished second in the tournament.
In 1957 he moved to Spain for FC Barcelona . There he scored 178 goals in 226 games and is one of the best goalscorers in the club's history with 0.8 goals per game. With Barça he won the Spanish championship twice , the Spanish cup once and the trade fair cup twice .
After the first leg of the final of the first draw of the 1958 trade fair cup against the selection of London in the stadium at Stamford Bridge ended 2-2, Evaristo contributed two goals to victory in the competition in the 6-0 second leg. In the second trade fair cup triumph in 1960, he was also the top scorer of the competition, although he was not used in the finals against Birmingham City FC . His goal with the sole was remembered eight minutes before the end of the game to make it 2-0 in the second leg of the second-round encounter in the European Cup against defending champions Real Madrid. Since Real could only shorten Canário to 1: 2 through Evaristo's compatriot Canário , the defending champion was eliminated from this competition for the first time after the first leg in Madrid ended 2-2. In the final, Barcelona lost 3-2 to SL Benfica from Lisbon.
In 1962 he moved to Real Madrid and won two more championships with the capitals in 1963 and 1964, but played only 17 league games in which he scored four goals at that time.
He then returned to Rio, where he won another national championship with Flamengo in 1965 and ended his playing career there in 1967.
Trainer
The greatest success was winning the Brazilian Championship in 1988 with EC Bahia after results of 2: 1 and 0: 0 in the finals against SC Internacional from Porto Alegre. In 1970, 1971, 1973, 1988, 1998 and 2001 he also won the Bahia State Championship with Bahia . A great success was winning the Brazilian Cup with Gremio Porto Alegre in 1997. With the club, he won the national championship in Rio Grande do Sul in 1990 . His impressive collection of titles also includes the four Pernambuco championships in 1972, 1976, 1978 and 1979 with Santa Cruz FC .
In 1985 he was Brazilian national coach for six friendly matches, but was replaced in June by Telê Santana , who led the team to the World Cup tournament in Mexico . Evaristo himself was in charge of the Iraqi national team , which remained without points, but had at least a relatively respectable goal difference with 1: 4.
With Qatar he won the 1992 golf cup .
