Evelyn Schlag (born December 22, 1952 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs ) is an Austrian writer . In addition to her writing activities, she also works as a literary critic and translator. Her literary repertoire includes short stories as well as poems and essays. Evelyn Schlag also published manuscripts in the literary magazine, among others .

Life

Evelyn Schlag is the daughter of a doctor. She grew up in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, a small town in the Lower Austrian Alpine foothills. After graduation she took in 1971 at the University of Vienna , a study of German and English studies on which it with the master's degree completed. From 1978 to 1981 she worked as a secondary school teacher in Vienna . Since 1981 she has been teaching German and English at the Federal Trade Academy in Waidhofen, where she lives with her husband.

In addition to her teaching profession, Evelyn Schlag has been a writer since the early 1980s. She writes short stories , novels and poetry . The predominant themes in her works are gender relations, the emancipation of women, as well as coping with isolation situations and experiences of illness.

Evelyn Schlag is a member of the Graz Authors' Assembly . Schlag has been writer-in-residence at Dickinson College in Carlisle , USA, since 2001 .

Schlag uses many different references in her works. Some of these topics can be found in different presentations in several texts. In her works, Evelyn Schlag deals, among other things, with gender relations, the fate of women and diseases. Identity problems are also often dealt with. Among other things, the “disappearance of women's identities” becomes an essential point in her works.

Isolation from society and the loss of one's own identity are also addressed in several of Evelyn Schlag's works, including tutoring and The Guardian of Shadows . In many of Schlag's texts, language is used to encode various roles. The orderliness or disorder of the language is here an indication of various identity traits that appear in the characters.
