history

Expedia was founded within Microsoft in 1995 . The website went online in 1996 and the company went public in 1999. At that time, Expedia operated websites in Germany (Expedia.de since 1999), Canada and Great Britain. In 2002 USA Networks (now IAC / InterActiveCorp ) acquired the majority of the company. In 2003 the rest of the shares were taken over. During the time as a subsidiary of IAC, a majority in eLong was acquired. In 2005 the company went public as Expedia, Inc with the subsidiaries Expedia, Expedia Corporate Travel, TripAdvisor , Classic Vacations, eLong, Hotels.com and Hotwire.com. In December 2012, Expedia bought the majority of the hotel search engine trivago (61.6 percent of the shares for 477 million euros).
