The experiment at Liechtenwerd is a 1955 founded the theater in the 9th Viennese district of Alsergrund with 49 seats. After the tribune of the Austrian dramatists founded in 1953, it is the oldest cellar theater in Vienna that still exists.

Origin of name

The part of the name Liechtenwerd refers to "Lichtenwerd", the former name of the former suburb of Lichtental . Werd is the Middle High German word for island .

history

The theater was founded by Erwin Pikl, Erich Pateisky and Conny Hannes Meyer as an experiment - Kleine Bühne am Lichtenwerd . For this purpose, a former coal cellar, which had been used as a warehouse for a folding boat manufacturer, was rented in Liechtensteinstrasse 132 from May 1, 1955 and adapted as a small stage. The opening took place on the occasion of the Wiener Festwochen 1956 with two world premieres.

Productions

To date, 196 productions with 255 pieces have been performed, 43 of which were premieres mainly by Austrian authors (including Totu-wa-botu by Wolfgang Bauer ) and 79 Austrian premieres .
