The Expresso [ɐjʃprɛsu] is a Portuguese weekly newspaper that appears on Saturdays . It was founded on January 6, 1973 by the future Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balsemão in Lisbon and basically has a liberal orientation. The newspaper is a member of the journalistic research network European Investigative Collaboration (EIC).

The Expresso is one next to the Público and Diário de Notícias the major newspapers regularly published in Portugal. The Expresso u. a. because of its detailed economic section and an extensive section with job advertisements. The editors-in-chief ( Redator executivo ) included Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (1980–1983), Augusto de Carvalho (1983–1984) and José António Saraiva (1984–2005) as well as Henrique Monteiro for the weekly newspaper belonging to the media group Impresa . Martim Silva is currently the editor-in-chief.

Since it was founded, the Expresso has always appeared on Saturdays, only in 1975 and 1976 the weekly newspaper, at the insistence of Pinto Balsemão, appeared every six months, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Expresso has been appearing in Berlin format since 2006 in order to better compete with the weekly Sol, founded by the former editor-in-chief José António Saraiva in 2005 .

At the end of 2014, the weekly circulation was 97,931. The Expresso was the winner of the 8th European Newspaper Award in the weekly newspaper category.

The weekly newspaper is now also published online. Última Hora , a compilation of the latest news, is also published daily online . The Expresso website also contains various blogs. The publications appearing online can be commented on by the readers.
