FDGB Cup 1972/73
The competition for the GDR soccer cup took place for the 22nd time in the 1972/73 season .
The 1972/73 cup competition had to be carried out in a new mode in the 1971/72 season due to the increase in the GDR league to 58 teams. The first main round began after an elimination game between Zentronik Sömmerda and Halleschen FC Chemie II (2: 1) with 72 teams: 15 district cup winners, 55 GDR league players and two relegated players from the GDR league , each from the 1971/72 season.
After an intermediate round, for which the seven remaining district cup winners were drawn the 29 advanced GDR league players, the 14 league teams were added to the competition in the second main round. With Wismut Gera II and progress Krumhermersdorf, only two district cup winners and 16 teams from the second-rate GDR league were represented here. Both district cup winners were eliminated, as were the three top division clubs Sachsenring Zwickau , Vorwärts Frankfurt and Wismut Aue .
If all games were played in a simple round up to the second main round, the matches of the eighth, quarter and semi-finals took place in home and return matches. In order to advance, the game was extended if necessary and a penalty shoot- out was carried out if necessary . The away goals rule was applied to the first and second legs .
Only the second team of FC Hansa Rostock survived the last sixteen of four remaining GDR league players , so that this club moved into the quarter-finals with two representatives. While the reserve team of the Hanseatic League had an easy game with league rival Chemie Zeitz , the league team eliminated the cup defender FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Last year's finalist and new DDR champion Dynamo Dresden failed at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and the away goals rule, and Hansa II also had to give up after two defeats against BFC Dynamo . In the semifinals, the BFC was defeated by FC Lok who moved into the final together with the three-time cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg .

Course of the game
For the 22nd final of the GDR soccer cup, the current third division 1. FC Magdeburg and the eighth of the current table 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig met. The Leipzig opened the game with an urgent assault in the direction of the Magdeburger Tor. He was rewarded after just five minutes with Frenzel's opening goal, which came free on a header from Matoul. Ten minutes later Magdeburg's defender had to save eighth on the line. Then the FCM was finally shaken awake and came in the 18th minute to their first chance to score, which Sparwasser just missed. A minute later, the Magdeburg Zapf does better, he headed a corner kicked by Seguin untenable in the Leipzig goal. The course of the game changed noticeably in favor of Magdeburg. The defenders got the Leipzig leaders Matoul and Frenzel under control, on the other hand Sparwasser embarrassed his guard Geisler one after the other. Sparwasser got Magdeburg's 2-1 lead shortly after the break after a steep pass from Enge. Due to their superiority, the players of the FCM then decreased in their concentration and gave more good chances to score. This brought the Leipzig fighting spirit to life again, and Altmann's counter goal on Frenzel's back pass let the game open again in the 73rd minute. Both teams mobilized the last reserves of strength, there were scoring chances on both sides. Three minutes before the final whistle, Magdeburger Enge and Sparwasser came together again for a combination. The right-back started from his own baseline, crossed to his center forward, and Sparwasser shot the unsustainable 3-2 win with which he won his team the fourth cup after 1964, 1965 and 1969.
- Comment by Sparwasser (1. FCM): “I hadn't imagined it would be that difficult. It's good that I scored two important goals today, Leipzig was very strong. Detlef (Enge) put me in an excellent position twice. "
- Commentary by Scherbaum (Lok-Trainer): “It was a good game. It's a shame that we lost because both teams were equal. Zapf's header shouldn't have fallen. "
