The Fédération Internationale de Basketball ( FIBA ) is the world basketball association based in Mies ( Switzerland ), which was called the Fédération Internationale de Basket Ball ( FIBB ) when it was founded in 1932 . Between 1935 and 1986 the association was called Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur , at the 13th World Congress in 1986 the word “amateur” was deleted, but the abbreviation FIBA was retained. In 1935, the association used the abbreviation FIBBA for a short time .
history
Basketball was recognized as an Olympic sport by the IOC in 1930 . Two years later, on June 18, 1932 , the FIBA was founded in Geneva by eight national basketball associations: the associations of Argentina , Greece , Italy , Lithuania , Portugal , Romania , Czechoslovakia and Switzerland were the founding members. In 1934, FIBA concluded an agreement with the World Handball Federation (IAHF) in Stockholm , according to which FIBA became the sole international representative of this sport. Up until this point in time, the IAHF also had an - albeit inactive - basketball commission. The efforts made since 1933 to be included in the program of the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 were recognized by the IOC in Oslo in 1935 . Olympic champions in basketball have been determined for men since 1936 and for women since 1976.
During the first tournament for the 1936 Olympic Games , James Naismith , the inventor of basketball, was elected Honorary President. FIBA organized since 1950, the basketball world championships men and since 1953 the World Basketball Championship the ladies .
The FIBA headquarters were in Geneva from 1932 to 1940, in Bern from 1940 to 1956 , in Munich from 1956 to 2002 , again in Geneva from 2002 to 2013 and have been in Mies since 2013 .
Since 1989 there are five zones: FIBA Africa , FIBA America , FIBA Asia , FIBA Europe and FIBA Oceania .
