The FMA I.Ae. 23 was a trainer aircraft from the Argentine manufacturer Fábrica Argentina de Aviones .

history

FMA manufactured around 190 Focke-Wulf Fw 44Js under license from 1937 to 1942 . In 1944 the Instituto Aerotécnico began a variant of the Fw 44 made from local woods under the name I.Ae. 23 to be used as a beginner's training aircraft and for aerobatics in the Air Force and the Argentine flying clubs. For this reason the machine was given the unofficial name Focke-Wulf de madera (Holz-Focke-Wulf). The first flight finally took place on July 7, 1945. Despite good performance, there was no series production, as more modern foreign aircraft were now available.

construction

The I.Ae. 23 was a guyed double-decker with a fixed tail wheel landing gear . The pilots sat one behind the other in open cockpits. In contrast to the Fw 44J , where it consisted of welded steel tubes, the fuselage, like the wings, was made of a wooden frame and covered with fabric. It was powered by the Siemens Sh 14 A seven-cylinder radial engine with 100 kW, manufactured under license .
