The "export hit" A 07 for socialist countries abroad

FSC Żuk (Polish: "Beetle") is the type designation of various Polish vans that were produced from June 24, 1959 to February 13, 1998 by the Polish manufacturer Fabryka Samochodów Ciężarowych (short: FSC ) in Lublin .

In addition to delivery vans and minibuses, fire fighting vehicles were also produced at times. The manufacturer used vehicle frames from the truck manufacturer FSC Lublin , but mostly with a different engine. In some cases, Soviet vehicles were also produced under license.

The Żuk was essentially based on the Warszawa M 20 , as was the ZSD Nysa pickup truck . Due to the shared vehicle base, the vehicles could be manufactured inexpensively and were popular in Poland.

technology

The Żuk pickup truck was based on a reinforced chassis from the Warszawa M 20 . The platform was initially available as a body, which initially had an unconventional steel structure in the shape of a pick-up. The payload was about 0.9 tons.

The vehicles had quite a lot of ground clearance, but this was bought with a high center of gravity. The inferior workmanship, including the front suspension, and the small wheelbase were also disadvantageous. The engine was also taken over from the Warszawa M 20 - a four-cylinder gasoline engine with OHV valve control . With 54, later 70 HP, the ZUK had above-average motorization for a van of the time. However, the fuel consumption was also very high, the "travel consumption" of the 54 PS unit was given as 15-19 l / 100 km. The maximum speed of the A 03 model (apparently the predecessor of the A 05 / A 06) was 90 km / h.

In later years a four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2417 cm³ was switched to, which developed the same performance with lower fuel consumption. The internal designation of the unit supplied by WSW-Motorenwerke Andoria was 4C90 . With the renewed cooperation between Fiat and two Polish vehicle manufacturers (see also Polski Fiat and FSO ), components of the Polski Fiat 125p were also used. Talks with General Motors in 1976 with the aim of being able to build a new vehicle to replace the obsolete models under license failed. Subsequent vehicles from 1977 only had a larger driver's cab for six people and a smaller loading area and were manufactured for the Polish market until the end of the company.

Important export vehicles

The older of two A 11B models

Mainly three of the manufacturer's vehicles were used in the GDR:

  • 1966 - Model A 06 (delivery van); the type designation "06" is obviously an export vehicle of the official version A 05; Payload: 850 kg; In the German literature the year of production is given as 1965, this year the vehicle was sold on the XXXIV. International Fair presented in Poznan; Series production began a year later
  • 1970 - Model A 07 (station wagon for passenger transport, high export share to socialist countries); in the GDR a. a. used to transport troops with the NVA; for seven people plus 350 kg of luggage
  • 1967 - Model A 11 (box van with separate driver's cab and a wooden body); for 950 kg payload
  • 1976 to 1980 - The GDR imported another 6,000 ZUK vans to alleviate the acute vehicle deficit in this vehicle class. It is the A 16B model, which was manufactured in the Węgrów branch from 1976. This was already equipped with the diesel engine. It had a towbar for trailers weighing up to 725 kg.

The end of the Żuk brand

After the collapse of the Polish economy, the company was unable to assert itself against the overwhelming foreign competition. The concept of building vehicles inexpensively on the basis of established standard concepts was no longer accepted by the market. One of the last vehicles, the Mitor-01 rail vehicle based on a minibus for road traffic (prototype 1995, last test drives in 2000), did not get beyond the test stage.

Until its provisional end in spring 2007, the manufacturer FSC built several of its own cars and models from other manufacturers as part of a joint venture company and other collaborations. The Żuk brand was not revived. The Daewoo Lublin was to be established as the successor to the Żuk vehicles .
