A mug shot shows a person wanted by the state authorities and serves to involve the population in the manhunt . This is usually followed by more detailed information about the person being sought and a contact address where relevant information can be given. They are used to fight crime (or what is defined as such under the respective government).

The mug shots are brought to the population depending on the presumed whereabouts of the wanted person. Frequent forms of publication are posters and / or articles in regional or national daily newspapers . Mug shots are a possible source of mug shots .
