The official blazon of the coat of arms is defined in the new cantonal constitution of May 16, 2004 in Article 2 as: Divided by black and white .

history

The canton of Friborg was separated from the Duchy of Savoy in 1477 and the Cross of Savoy, which had prevailed until then, was displaced. The new coat of arms was adopted from the coat of arms of the city of Freiburg, the oldest representation is found in 1478, since then the coat of arms has remained unchanged.

There is the following legend about the origin of the city's coat of arms: Duke Berthold IV. , Who founded the city in 1157, stayed in a shed near Bürglen . Because of the cold he covered himself with some blankets. It wasn't until the next morning that he realized that he had covered himself with used flour and coal sacks. That is why his clothes were black (coal) above and white (flour) below.
