Fahri Sabit Korutürk (born August 3, 1903 in Istanbul ; † October 12, 1987 there ) was a Turkish politician, statesman and admiral .

Korutürk initially embarked on a military career in the Navy . From 1916 to 1923 he attended the naval school and then until 1933 the naval academy. In the following years he held several posts and offices, for example as a naval attaché in Rome , Berlin and Stockholm . In 1936 he was present at the signing of the Treaty of Montreux . In 1950 he was promoted to admiral, later to naval admiral.

After his retirement in 1960 he worked as ambassador in Moscow and Madrid . In 1968 he became a member of the Senate. From April 6, 1973 to April 6, 1980, he was the sixth President of Turkey, succeeding General Cevdet Sunay . Korutürk was elected by parliament as a compromise candidate after the resistance of the major parties brought down the actual favorite of the military leadership , General Faruk Gürler . As a strictly non-partisan head of state, Korutürk was able to assert his authority and political weight even against the powerful rival party leaders and prime ministers Bülent Ecevit and Suleyman Demirel . After the end of his term in office, dozens of ballots failed to find a majority in parliament to elect a successor. The permanent crisis led to General Kenan Evren's military coup in September 1980 and thus to the elimination of the "Second Republic" (created with the 1961 constitution). Korutürk disapproved of the new constitution passed under Evren as being too authoritarian.

The honorary name Korutürk ("Protector of the Turks") was given to him personally by Kemal Ataturk .

Fahri Korutürk had been married since 1944. His marriage to his wife Emel resulted in two sons and a daughter. His son Selah and daughter-in-law Zergün Korutürk entered the diplomatic service of Turkey.
