The bicycle rally in Berlin and Brandenburg is a bicycle demonstration and over the years has developed into the world's largest and most famous bicycle rally. The aim is to make cycling safer and more attractive and to promote gentle mobility as part of a traffic turnaround. The first bicycle rally took place on June 5, 1977 and until 1989 was limited to the area of West Berlin . The number of participants increased steadily, since the mid-1990s there were over 25,000 participants annually, in 2002 the limit of 100,000 participants was reached according to the organizers, in 2004 there were 250,000 participants according to the Berlin police. That number dropped to 100,000 in 2005 and 2006 due to bad weather. The organizer has been the Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) Berlin e. V. The Berliner Fahrradsternfahrt was originally brought into being by the loose cyclists' association, Grüne Radler .

On various routes with many meeting points and a total route length of over 1000 kilometers (in 2015), the bicycle tour leads to the center of the city of Berlin, where it ends with the goal of the environmental festival between the Brandenburg Gate and the Großer Stern .

A special feature of the rally is that it is only possible to drive on the city motorway in the area of the AVUS and the Britzer Tunnel on this day ; other parts of the Berlin city motorways could also be used on earlier rallies. Within the city, drivers have to wait up to an hour before they reach the other side of the intersection.

The Berliner Fahrradsternfahrt usually takes place on the first Sunday in June on the occasion of World Environment Day. This should also point out the importance of the bicycle as an environmentally friendly means of transport .

The last rally in Berlin took place on June 2, 2019 under the motto "More space for your bike".

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there will be no rally in 2020 for the first time in more than 40 years. It was planned for June 7th with the motto: "Streets for everyone - # MehrPlatzfürsRad".

It is also carried out as a demonstration in accordance with the Assembly Act . In addition to the promotion of bicycle traffic, the promotion of the environmental network is required.

The Hamburg bicycle rally is the annually recurring endpoint of a campaign for environmentally friendly means of transport. As early as March, handouts will be distributed and campaigns will be carried out to draw attention to the rally and its goals. The Hamburg bicycle rally is supported by an alliance that includes various ADFC groups, but also initiatives critical of globalization such as attac , peace and environmental associations such as Greenpeace , associations for environmental protection and gentle tourism such as the Friends of Nature , large transport associations such as the Verkehrsclub Deutschland , as well smaller initiatives and associations.
