history

The FLA was founded in 1999 following the initiative of several clothing and shoe manufacturers and Bill Clintons . The first meeting of these parties, as well as workers, religious, consumer and human rights groups, took place in the White House in 1996 after several scandals over child labor and poor working conditions rocked the wasteland. It was agreed to take steps to improve working conditions around the world and to set up an independent commission to write reports to make purchasing decisions easier and to pay special attention to working conditions. With the support of the AIP, it was finally possible in 1999 to found an organization for these agreed tasks. Ultimately, it is a collaboration between companies, civil society organizations, colleges and universities.

Auret van Heerden was President of the FLA from 2001 to 2013. During this time he set the general strategic and political direction of the FLA. He worked in advocacy and outreach work and carried out a number of special projects to strengthen the organization's code of conduct and improve and expand its assessment and remediation methods. He has also expanded the organization's commitment beyond the apparel and footwear industries to include electronics and agriculture.

Since 2015, the organization has been led by Sharon Waxman, who previously served as Vice President of the Legal Department of the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
