Bellows refers to an elastic, " accordion-like " hose made of rubber , plastic or leather , which is attached over mechanically sliding machine parts to protect them from external influences, especially contamination, and to seal them off from the environment.

Bellows for sealing washing machines

A bellows is also used to seal the movable and rotating laundry drum from the housing and the tub. The bellows is a typical wear part in washing machines.

Bellows for ventilation of moving machine parts

A bellows is also used to guide air between two mutually movable machine parts, for example for cooling - for example between the cooling fans in the car body of an electric locomotive and the traction motors in the movable bogie .

Bellows between car bodies of multi-part vehicles

In the railway bellows are used to transition between two coaches to protect them from weather and drafts. Bellows were first used in Europe since 1891 on express trains . Since the 1950s , rubber bulge junctions have been increasingly used instead of bellows , which are simpler and shorter and do not require manual work to connect and disconnect. In narrow-gauge railways and train sets bellows are still built today. Today the best-known example of trains with bellows in Germany is the Intercity Express family. All of its members (from ICE V, 1, 2, as well as S, to 3, T and TD) are equipped with folding bellows at the car crossings.

In articulated buses , articulated trolleybuses and articulated trams , a bellows covers the joint between the vehicle bodies .

On a motorcycle, there are often two bellows on the motorcycle fork to protect the fork seals .

Metallic bellows

Thin-walled metallic bellows with rounded shafts are used as compensation elements in pressure vessel and pipeline construction.

Bellows as guideway protection

Bellows are also used on all types of machines to protect guideways and spindles.

Bellows on car trailers

Bellows are used on the run-up section to protect the shock absorber on trailer drawbars.

Bellows on valves

In valves for use in the chemical industry, bellows are used for hermetically sealed sealing of moving valve components from stationary components.
