Family Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Family Day is the name of a national holiday in South Africa , in the Canadian provinces of Alberta , Ontario and Saskatchewan , in the US state of Arizona and as "Family and Community Day " in the Australian capital territory . It's also a nationwide US day of action.

In German-speaking countries, the term family day is understood as a joint venture between adults and children, a meeting of members of a family association , or an event organized by institutions and companies with special conditions for families .

Australian capital territory

Family and Community Day is celebrated on the first Tuesday in November, when the Melbourne Cup horse race is also held. This day was declared a public holiday in 2007 under Section 3 (1) (b) of the Public Holidays Act of 1953 of the Australian Capital Territory and is expected to take place again in 2008. Speaking to the Legislative Council of the Australian Capital Territory , Mr. Andrew Barr, Minister for Industrial Affairs of the ACT, justified the further public holiday as follows:

“… I… will shortly declare the Family and Community Day holiday on Tuesday, November 6th as a public holiday to enable workers to take a break from their hectic working lives and to spend some quality time with their family and friends. As I have observed in previous times, Mr Speaker, Australians do work the longest hours of any country in the western world. We do deserve a break. Translation: I am declaring Tuesday, November 6th, as a family and community day, a public holiday to allow employees to take time out from their hectic everyday work and spend free time with their family or friends. As I noted earlier, Australians have the highest number of annual hours worked in the western world. ... That's why we Australians deserve some free time.

Canada

Canada does not have a uniform federal holiday, Family Day, but some provinces have a statutory holiday.

Alberta

Family Day takes place on the third Monday in February, and it falls on the same day as Presidents Day, a US holiday . The holiday was first observed in 1990. Before Saskatchewan also introduced Family Day as a public holiday in 2007, Alberta was the only province in Canada to have a public holiday in February.

The holiday was announced by Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley on behalf of the Alberta Prime Minister Don Getty , under the impression of a drug scandal in which Dale Getty, the son of the Prime Minister, was also involved (Dale Getty was arrested for several drug offenses and condemned). Prime Minister Getty believed he had neglected his family in the wake of the affair and said it was important for all residents of Alberta to spend more time with their families.

Getty has been criticized for this arrangement. Many Albertans believed he was abusing his position to compensate for guilty feelings towards his family. Many employers also took the view that another public holiday would be an unnecessary cost burden. As a result of the criticism, the so-called Heritage Day was devalued to a non-work holiday (civic holiday). In fact, Heritage Day was a statutory, non-working holiday on which employees did not have to work or only paid holiday wages. The workers would have preferred to keep Heritage Day as a day off. The voluntary recognition of Heritage Day as an official holiday was open to employers.

Manitoba

In February 2007 it was announced that the Manitoba provincial government was also considering introducing a public holiday in February. Legislators declared that like Alberta is a public holiday on the third Monday in February, the bill was passed by Manitoba's Legislative Assembly on April 17, 2007. This day should also remember Louis Riel , a name that is held in honorable memory by the students and pupils, as it reminds of the Métis leader, the "father" of Manitoba. The first Louis Riel Day was February 18, 2008.

Ontario

Ontario's Family Day is also held on the third Monday in February as a public holiday. It was introduced on October 11, 2007, after the fall Ontario election of 2007, in which Dalton McGuinty was re-elected as prime minister. It took place for the first time on February 18, 2008 . This additional holiday increases the number of state holidays in the Province of Ontario to nine per year.

Saskatchewan

In October 2006, the Prime Minister of Saskatchewans proposed this additional holiday beginning in 2007. The amendment to the “Labor Standards Amendment Act”, 2006, was introduced to Parliament on November 1st, 2006 and confirmed by the so-called “ Royal Assent ” on December 6th. The law made the third Monday in February Family Day and became immediately effective; the first family day in Saskatchewan was February 19, 2007.

By and large, the number of annual holidays has remained the same for many as Easter Monday is no longer viewed as a public holiday by the private sector. Economists and business people still estimate the total cost of this additional holiday at $ 140 million a year and are calling for tax breaks to mitigate the financial consequences. The provincial government cut corporate tax burdens by $ 95 million, but the number of non-working holidays has stayed the same for most of the companies that have benefited from the scheme.

South Africa

In 1994, Easter Monday was declared Family Day again.

Namibia

In Namibia , Family Day is celebrated on December 26th.

United States

Arizona

In the state of Arizona is American Family Day celebrated since 1978th It is the fourteenth public holiday in the state, and the date is the first Sunday in August.

Nationwide

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has found through research that the more often children eat together with their families, the less they smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs ( addiction syndromes ). You should spend time with them eating ("Spend time ..."), talking to them about their friends and their interests ("Talk to them ..."), answering their questions and listening to what they say ("Answer their questions ...") and recognize that one has the strength to help the children to remain “substance-free” (“Recognize that ...”), ie to become a “STAR”.

In 2001, CASA started the Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children to remind parents of this. It has sometimes been called National Family Day since 2008 . Since the first year there have been proclamations by the President , since 2003 also in advance. The day is celebrated on the last or penultimate Monday in September. (2001: 24th, 2002: 23rd, 2003: 22nd, 2004: 27th, 2005: 26th, 2006: 25th, 2007: 24th, 2008: 22nd, 2009: 28th) In 2008 the day supported by all 50 governors and more than 800 mayors or county executives .
