History of felt processing in Soltau

Factory building of Gebr. Röders AG

In 1851 an operating department of the Soltau company Carl Breiding & Sohn started producing wool felt products in Soltau. In 1922 this was outsourced to the independent company Gebr. Röders AG . From 1966 needle felt was also produced in the factory. This resulted in the first production of filter felts in 1972. In 1986 the company received a patent for the manufacture of needle felt tubes. The company premises are centrally located in downtown Soltau.

The listed brick building used for the Filzwelt was erected in 1877 and rebuilt after a fire in 1886. Before the renovation, it was used as a warehouse and archive and is directly adjacent to Marktstrasse .

Planning and construction of the felt world

The basis of the Filzwelt idea is an urban development contract signed by Gebr. Röders AG and the city of Soltau in 2000, which provides for the factory yard on the pedestrian zone to be opened to the general public. The first thoughts on the world of felt took place in 2005. A feasibility study was started in 2008, financed with 23,000 euros from EU funds and around 8,000 euros from the Spiel Stiftung . In 2008, Gebr. Röders AG received the KulturKontakte award of the state of Lower Saxony for the cooperation .

Initially, investments in the amount of 5.8 million euros were estimated, which the Oberfinanzdirektion rejected as too high. The planning was then revised, for example a square elevator was chosen instead of a round one. The conversion of the historic building tower into an observation tower was also canceled. Ultimately, a total of 4.9 million euros were invested in the world of felt. Of this, 3.42 million euros flow through the NBank from EU funds ( ERDF ). a. the Lower Saxony Foundation (300,000 euros), the Hamburg metropolitan region (400,000 euros), the German Federal Environment Foundation (125,000 euros), the Lower Saxony Sparkassenstiftung and the Kreissparkasse Soltau (300,000 euros) as well as the interest group for trade and commerce Soltau (50,000 euros) with grants.

The originally planned start of construction in July 2013 was delayed, so that construction finally began in March 2014. The only external change to the building is the 23.70 meter high elevator tower with a viewing platform. A part of the factory courtyard ( Röders-Hof ) in the entrance area of the Filzwelt will be integrated into the pedestrian zone.

The agency Kunstraum GFK from Hamburg is responsible for the exhibition concept.

Opening of the felt world

The opening took place on August 1st, 2015. A festive inauguration was held on July 23, 2015. The operation of Felto is in the hands of a non-profit stock corporation in which the Heidekreis district and the Spiel Foundation are involved. Every citizen can also buy shares.

Minerva employees from the Heide workshops will take over part of the visitor service. Four scientifically qualified employees should form the full-time core team.

exhibition

The exhibition will cover 1,360 m² on five barrier-free floors. On the ground floor there will be a felt market with a shop, one world shop, bistro, recycling workshop and artist's studio. On the first floor, visitors can experience felt sensually with numerous experiment stations and a play area. Manual and industrial production is presented on the second floor, accompanied by historical backgrounds on the history of the location. The third floor uses numerous exhibits from art, design, technology and everyday life to show the many possible uses of felt. One focus is on early felt toys from the Steiff company. An art gallery and an event room are planned on the top floor. One and a half floors higher is the viewing platform, which offers a view over the roofs of Soltau.
