Ferdinand Hirt (born  April 21, 1810 in Lübeck ; †  February 5, 1879 in Breslau ) was a German university and publishing house bookseller in Breslau.

Life

After school in Lübeck, Ferdinand Hirt learned the trade of bookseller from 1827 to 1830 with Johann Friedrich Korn in Breslau . In 1832 he opened his own bookshop there. After some time as a general-purpose bookseller, he began to publish textbooks and books for young people. For example, he took over the self- published wall picture primer by Friedrich Gotthold Kunze , which was first published in 1847 and is considered one of the first school books for all elementary schools. He attached particular importance to the illustration of the works published by him with woodcuts .

In the early 1860s he was appointed royal university bookseller. In 1864 he sold his assortment business and from then on devoted himself only to the publishing house. He passed part of his company on to his son Arnold Hirt , who thus founded the Ferdinand Hirt & Son publishing house in Leipzig . After the death of his father, Arnold Hirt also took over the Breslau publishing house Ferdinand Hirt .
