Johannes Ferdinand Oesterhoff OCist (born October 30, 1672 in Münster , † October 22, 1748 in Marienfeld ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, abbot of the Marienfeld monastery and auxiliary bishop in Münster .

Life

Ferdinand Oesterhoff entered the Cistercian monastery Marienfeld on November 25, 1692 and made his profession on December 8, 1693 . He was ordained a priest on April 4, 1699 and was then prior and cellar of the Marienfeld Abbey. On February 3, 1717, under the leadership of Abbot Laurentius Kremper von Hardehausen, he was elected 42nd Abbot of Marienfeld - and thus at the same time Commendatarabb of the Riddagshausen monastery, which became Lutheran during the Reformation . The blessing he received in the monastery Himmerod by the local abbot Robert Bootz. Immediately after his election, in the spring of 1717, he had the southern wing of the abbey completed. In the summer of 1717 he had a Marienkapelle set up on the south side of the monastery church.

On December 20, 1723 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Münster and titular bishop of Agathonice . The Paderborn auxiliary bishop Pantaleon Bruns OSB donated him the episcopal ordination on January 22, 1724.

On January 22, 1746, Oesterhoff resigned from his office as bishop and as Abbot of Marienfeld. At the age of 75 he died two and a half years later, on October 22, 1748, and was buried in the Marienfeld monastery near the sacristy in front of the altar of St. Bernard.

Ordinations

Oesterhoff's ordination register has only been partially preserved. It begins on April 15, 1724 and ends on December 22, 1731. He usually performed his ordinations in the Nicolaikapelle on the cathedral courtyard in Münster or in the parish church of Sassenberg . He granted tonsure to 681 candidates for priesthood , 643 minor orders , ordained 554 sub-deacons , 519 deacons and 532 priests. In the last group were 26 foreigners, 249 religious and 257 secular priests of the diocese of Münster.
