Fernando el de Triana , actually Fernando Rodríguez Gómez (* 15. April 1867 in Seville , † 7. September 1940 in Camas ), was a Spanish writer , bookseller , Flamenco - singer and flamenco guitarist .

Life

His parents were Joaquín Rodríguez Jiménez and Ana Gómez Pérez. Maternal grandfather was guitarist El Cachinero . Although Fernando Rodríguez Gómez was born in the San Luis district of Seville, he always emphasized his ties to Triana .

He was called Decano del Cante jondo , dean of solemn song. With his powerful, rough and dark voice he gave the Malagueñas , Seguiriyas , Soleares , Tarantas and Fandangos tragic depth. Triana was the place where his successful artist career developed. He founded a flamenco group there. He sang and played guitar masterfully and was also a teacher and protagonist of flamenco. For a while he lived in Nador , Morocco , where he ran a restaurant. He later returned to Andalusia and settled in the city of Coria del Río in the province of Seville . There he began work on his monograph Arte y artistas flamencos , which was published in Madrid in 1935. In Madrid's Teatro Español he staged the performance Exaltación del Arte Flamenco , with Antonia Mercé , Manuel Machado , La Argentina and other artists. Before the flamenco performance, which was directed by Ángel Pericet , Fernando el de Triana performed his own texts.

Arte y artistas flamencos comprises a series of biographies of artists of his time and his past as well as a lot of visual material that was still quite rare at the time. It is considered a standard work on the history of flamenco. The critic Manuel Bohórquez, author of a biography of Fernando el de Triana, wrote:

"Sin ese libro no sabríamos ni la mitad de lo que sabemos sobre los creadores de lo que hoy conocemos por flamenco"

"Without this book we would not know half of what we know about those we know today as creators of flamenco"

- Manuel Bohórquez

Fernando el de Triana later moved to Camas and founded the small restaurant La Sonanta there . He died impoverished on September 7, 1940 in Camas.
