A festival (from the Latin festivus 'festive, solemn or cheerful' ) is usually an event lasting several days at which artists perform and present art productions. In the German-speaking countries, such events in the field of high culture , especially classical music and theater , are also called festivals.

Festivals can be linked to artistic competitions in their genre or can themselves have a competitive nature.

Especially at music festivals one names the compilation of all appearing musicians or music groups to an overall program often with the Anglicism line-up .
