The Festkantata WAB 16 (full title: Fest-Cantate on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone for the cathedral building ) is a sacred choral work by Anton Bruckner for four-part male choir , male solo quartet, bass solo and wind orchestra .

The composition was commissioned by the Bishop of Linz, Franz Joseph Rudigier, for the laying of the foundation stone of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Linz . The theology professor Maximilian Prammesberger provided the text . For the instrumental line-up, Bruckner selected a large wind orchestra (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass tuba) as well as timpani and an alternative organ setting ad libitum . Bruckner completed the work on April 25, 1862, and on May 1 the cantata was premiered on the building site under the direction of Engelbert Lanz .

The work is divided into eight short parts:

  • I. Choir "Praise the Lord" (male choir, orchestra)
  • II. Solo quartet and choir "Thaw your strength and strength" (soloists, male choir, flute, clarinet, bassoon)
  • III. Choir "Praise the Lord" (male choir, orchestra)
  • IV. Bass solo "Aus der Erde Schoß" (bass soloist, orchestra)
  • V. Solo quartet "This is the Immaculate House" (soloists a cappella)
  • VI. Prelude (clarinets, bassoons)
  • VII. Choir a cappella "The tribes of the country wallen pious" (male choir a cappella)
  • VIII. Choir "Praise the Lord" (male choir, orchestra)

Numbers 3 and 8 take up the main topic from number 1 at the beginning. In number 1, the fugue “base and corner stone” is connected to the main theme.

A re-performance of the work in 1955 by the Wiener Männergesang-Verein under Karl Etti was followed by the printing of a piano reduction and the orchestral parts by the music publisher Doblinger . The study score was published in 1987 (2nd edition 1998) as part of the Critical Complete Edition.

In 1995 Gerhard Track edited the work as a festive cantata for Christmas with a mixed choir and a new text by Herbert Vogg, "Glory to God in the height".

text

Praise the Lord,
sing praises to his holy name!
You are the foundation and cornerstone, Lord of
your Church, great and noble.
Thaw your power and strength
over foundation and stone,
which we dedicate to the holy work
.
Praise the Lord, Mary praise
Received without blemish!
From the womb of the earth
the building grows
gigantic
in the blue of the sky.
That is the Immaculate House, In
it the
spring of grace opens, And flows rich and bright
into the land.
The tribes of the land piously tumble
from all regions to the cathedral
From our dear women;
They greet them a thousand times
and draw salvation in the grace room
through faith and confidants.
Praise the Lord,
sing praises to his holy name,
praise Mary,
the mighty helper. Amen.
