Filippo Grandi (* 1957 in Milan ) is an Italian UN - diplomat and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees .

Life

Filippo Grandi studied Modern History at the University of Milan and Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He received an honorary doctorate from Coventry University and was a researcher at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut . He is an Honorary Associate at the Refugee Studies Center (RSC) at the University of Oxford .

Grandi has worked in international relations for over 30 years , 27 of them for the United Nations. From 1988 to 2004 he worked in various functions and countries for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), then with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), before becoming Deputy Commissioner General of the United Nations Aid Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Area in 2005 East (UNRWA) was Commissioner General from 2010 to March 2014. Grandi has worked for UNHCR in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and at its Geneva headquarters.

At the proposal of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon , the General Assembly elected Grandi as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees . He succeeded António Guterres , whose term of office expired on December 31, 2015.
