history

In the 19th century, a Jewish community with farmland was settled here. At the turn of the century, Japanese immigrants came to San Francisco and settled here. After the great earthquake of 1906 , the area was badly damaged. During the reconstruction of the inner city, local trade took place here. After 1942, during the Second World War , the Japanese immigrants were interned, making the district attractive to Afro-American workers and artists. After 1948 the disintegrating district was advertised as a redevelopment area. Today it is a mixed neighborhood and over 50 percent black, approx. 27 percent white and 14 percent Asian live here.
