The Münster Film Festival is organized by the Münster Film Workshop . It takes place every two years in the autumn of the odd year. In October 2013, the film festival was included in the Red List of Culture of the German Cultural Council and classified in category 2 as endangered .

history

The first festival took place in 1981 in the cinema under the title "Filmzwerge". It was still a pure short film festival . In the early 1990s, the festival moved to the Schloßtheater, where it took place for the last time in 2003.

2005

From October 19 to 23, 2005, the 11th film festival took place in Kino Stadt New York. There was a German-language short film competition in which 68 of 520 films submitted took part. Prizes totaling 8500 euros were awarded here. For the first time there was a European feature film competition at the film festival, in which eight films competed for the director's award of 10,000 euros. The Romanian Radu Mihăileanu won with his film Live and Become . Films by and about Theo van Gogh were shown in cooperation with the film | spiegel foundation . The Heaven and Hell series showed five love stories in cooperation with the diocese of Münster . Films produced by the Münster Film Workshop were shown in the Münster Connection. A crime scene preview rounded off the program.

2007

The 12th festival took place from October 17th to 21st, 2007 in the Cineplex Münster . In the European feature film competition “Work! Don't Work! ”Eight films took part on the subject of work. The director's award, endowed with 10,000 euros, was won by the Finn Aleksi Salmenperä with his film Man's job . The jury gave its debut film Gegenüber by director Jan Bonny an honorable mention.

52 films took part in the German-language short film competition. The Grand Prize of the Filmwerkstatt Münster in the amount of 5,000 euros went to the short film Hochhaus by Nikias Chryssos, the sponsorship award of the WDR in the amount of 2,500 euros to Hilda & Karl von Toke Constantin Hebbeln and the audience award in the amount of 1,000 euros to 15 Minutes of Truth by Nico Zingelmann. Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Hazen & Mr. Horlocker from Stefan Müller and Kobe from Rainer Komers received honorable mentions . The short film Miss Pabst & Miss Wüst by Christa Pfafferott received a material prize that was awarded for the first time by a student jury.

The Münster.Land script award went to Ruth Olshan and Heike Fink for raspberries with mustard .

2009

The 13th Münster Film Festival took place from October 7th to 11th, 2009 in the Cineplex. The deadline for submitting films was July 1st. With around 7,000 visitors, it was the most successful festival to date. The German-language short film competition once again presented all topics and genres, the European feature film competition this year was themed risk.

A highlight of the festival was the German premiere of the film Unter Bauern - Retter in der Nacht with Veronica Ferres in the lead role, which tells the survival story of the Jewess Marga Spiegel , who hid from Münsterland farmers during the time of National Socialism and thus from deportation and murder was saved. The episode Temple Robbers of the ARD-Münster-Tatort was shown as a cinema premiere during the festival in the Cineplex.

The winner of the European feature film competition on the subject of »Risk« was the bulky, poetic film fairy tale Versailles (one of the last appearances by the late Guillaume Depardieu ) by director Pierre Schoeller, who was visibly touched by the award. In the short film competition, the Grand Prize of the Filmwerkstatt Münster went to Daniel Büttner and Max Baberg for their animated film dropped. There were honorable mentions for the actor Jacob Matschenz in the film flies and Patrick Doberenz and Philipp Enders for their innovative short documentary Man dies. The winner of the audience award, donated by the Münster film theater companies, was the documentary Wagah by Supriyo Sen about an absurd spectacle at the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. The touching film Rainbow Angel by Anna Kasten was awarded the sponsorship prize of the WDR Studio Münster. In the competition in the school program, the student jury awarded its prize on the subject of "Courage" to the 10-minute short film Resistance by Baris Aladag. 2011

The 14th Münster Film Festival 2011 took place from October 12th to 16th, 2011. Filmmakers were able to submit their entries for the German-language short film competition and for the European feature film competition, which this year went into the fourth round with the theme "What holds life together", until June 30, 2011.

For the German-language short film competition over 550 film submissions had arrived at the festival office, for the European feature film competition 75 productions from all over Europe had arrived. The school program was under the heading "Friendship"; in the Netherlands film series, documentaries from the neighboring country were presented; the late block "Unheimlich & Böse" (Unheimlich & Böse) offered a selection of fantastic films for night owls with strong nerves. The series “The Best Short” showed the short film competition winning films of the festival editions from 1981–2009 across all styles and art movements, content and technical implementation possibilities of the short film of the past 30 years. Current productions from the region could be seen in the “Münster Connection” section. As part of the festival, the exhibition “Times are us” with twelve positions on video art, which was on view from September 30, 2011 in the exhibition hall for contemporary art in Münster, was part of the festival.

The prize of 7,500 euros for the best director in the European game competition went to Fatih Akın's former assistant director , the 36-year-old Turk, Seren Yüce for his film "Majority". The film workshop's grand prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, went in equal parts to the animation and documentary film "Leonid's Story" by Rainer Ludwigs and Tetyana Chernyavska about a true fate in the shadow of Chernobyl, and to the short film "Father's Mother Child" by Daniel Karl Krause. The 31-minute short film "Jessi" by Mariejosephin Schneider was awarded the sponsorship prize of the WDR-Studios Münster, endowed with 3,000 euros. Till Nowak's 6-minute film "The Centrifuge Brain Project" received the audience award of the Münster film theater companies in the amount of 1,000 euros. In the short film program of the schools, the student jury prize "OmU", donated by the Münster subtitling workshop, was awarded for the first time, which includes the subtitling of the winner's next film. He won the tragic comedy "Daniels Asche" by Boris Kunz .

2013

The 15th Münster Film Festival took place from October 9th to 13th, 2013. The biennial film festival is now a firmly established factor in the nationwide film festival landscape. The theme of "time" was placed at the center of the European feature film competition. The European Feature Film Competition comprised eight entries by young directors who dealt either with content or aesthetics with the subject of “time”. A jury made up of European filmmakers awarded the prize for the best director. The short film competition offered a representative cross-section of productions from the past two years from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. From 560 submissions of films up to 45 minutes in length, 45 films were selected for the seven program blocks of this competition. No less than three prizes for young talent were awarded in this section.

In the school program “Ready to film - shorts for teens”, which was thematically associated with the leitmotif, various short film blocks were presented for school classes. A youth jury evaluated itself and awarded the prize for the best implementation on the topic.

In the extensive supporting program, the series "Unheimlich und Böse" presented extraordinary works from the field of fantastic films. Creative people from the region presented their work in the Münster-Connection. And documentaries from Germany and Europe highlighted further perspectives on the main topic “time” in the section Doks Special Time.

The special program enriched the video and media art exhibition "one of us cannot be wrong" with exhibits in the Kunsthalle Münster from October 4th to 31st. And in the multi-day symposium filmLab EU 2.0, film workshops and initiatives exchanged ideas about Professional Alternative Filmmaking in Europe.

2015

The 16th Münster Film Festival took place from 23 to 27 September 2015. Over a hundred filmmakers were invited to present their latest works and discuss them with the audience. There were eight films to choose from in the European feature film competition, and 37 films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland competed in the short film competition. The "Münster Connection", in which films from Münster were previously shown, was extended to all of Westphalia for the first time this year . In this section, music videos were also shown that young people from Münster between 10 and 14 years of age filmed and edited themselves in two summer workshops. The "Nightwatch" section offered a selection of thrillers and horror films at a late hour.

In 2015, the Münster Film Festival again had a unique focus in Germany: Current films from the Netherlands were shown in the "Focus NL" section. In addition , a tribute was dedicated to the Dutch cameraman Robby Müller , who was also present as a guest of honor.

The films "The Boy and the World" and " X + Y " were shown especially for young people between 10 and 14 years of age .

In the Cinema Münster, the "Days of Provincial Film" threw a documentary look at people and stories beyond the metropolises. In addition, young artists from North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands presented their current positions on video and media art as part of the exhibition "and in the meantime a latte macchiato" in the Kunsthalle Münster . The filmLab 3.0, which took place on September 24th and 25th, offered independent film workshops and organizations the opportunity to network with one another.
