The Filmmuseum Potsdam was founded in 1981 as the "Film Museum of the GDR", making it the oldest film museum with its own collection and exhibitions in Germany. In 1990 it was given its current name. It has been sponsored by the State of Brandenburg since 1991 and belongs to the Babelsberg Film University in terms of organization . The focus of the collections and the permanent exhibition is on the oldest film studio in the world in Babelsberg , its film productions and the artists who worked there on films by Bioscop, Ufa , DEFA and Studio Babelsberg . Temporary exhibitions, family exhibitions and foyer exhibitions on German and international film and media topics complement the exhibition program. The Filmmuseum operates a museum shop and a cinema with several performances daily, silent film screenings are accompanied by music on the historic Welte cinema organ .

The museum is housed in the stables of the Potsdam City Palace.

history

The foundation of the museum goes back to a 1977 resolution passed by the Potsdam city council. The stables belonging to the Potsdam City Palace were dilapidated, so that extensive restoration and conversion work had to take place first. The museum was opened in April 1981 as the "Film Museum of the GDR " with an exhibition on film technology . In 1983 an exhibition on the history of Ufa and DEFA followed. After German reunification in 1990, the collections, research and program were expanded considerably. In 1991, the State of Brandenburg took over responsibility and financing of the museum, which had previously been run as a department of the State Palaces and Gardens Potsdam-Sanssouci. In 1993, the interior was modernized and a restored Welte cinema organ was installed in the cinema hall . In 2011 the fourth permanent exhibition “Dream Factory - 100 Years of Film in Babelsberg” was opened. Since 2011, the Filmmuseum Potsdam has been part of the Babelsberg Konrad Wolf Film University as an in-institute . It is an institution of the state of Brandenburg, assigned to the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture. In 2014 the building was extensively renovated, including accessibility and fire protection.

Exhibitions

The Film Museum presents three exhibition formats at the same time: the permanent exhibition "Dream Factory - 100 Years of Film in Babelsberg" deals with the eventful history of the oldest film studio in the world ( Studio Babelsberg ), as well as the various trades that form the main idea of the exhibition during the film production process. In each of the themed rooms, visitors to the exhibition will discover films by Ufa, DEFA and Studio Babelsberg. From the first idea and the first version of the script to the cast, costume, make-up, production design, shooting, editing, sound design, to marketing and the film award, the filmmaking process is illustrated interactively. Multimedia stations in three of the themed rooms invite you to try out what people are doing from the film. Original props, costumes, stage set models, film technology and exhibits from the estates of various filmmakers can be seen. A changing exhibition, which changes at different intervals, deals with a specific focus on the upper floor, while an additional foyer exhibition including the monthly changing "special object" invites visitors to the house free of charge.

movie theater

The “Kino im Marstall” of the Filmmuseum Potsdam is the only film theater in the historic city center of Potsdam and invites you to watch historical fiction and documentary films as well as selected current productions - original with subtitles or dubbed - every day except Mondays. Children's films complete the program. The Fast missed series is dedicated to films that, due to the ever faster exploitation chain, are shown far too briefly in cinemas and are only included in the program here. Events with filmmakers and audience discussions regularly frame the screenings. Silent films are accompanied by live music on the Welte cinema organ, for which the Filmmuseum Potsdam has also published a brochure. The cinema hall can be rented for parties and events.

load

In addition to current exhibition catalogs and own publications, the museum shop offers a selection of books on the history of film and Babelsberg as a media location . Many of the films featured in the exhibitions are available on DVD or Blu-ray Disc . Selected devotional objects on film history as well as postcards and film posters complete the offer.

Stocks

The collections focus on films and artists who worked in the Babelsberg film studio. The inventory includes materials and technology that have to do with films, their creators and the theatrical release, such as scene, work, poster and portrait photos, set design and costume designs, models, props, costumes, production documents and documents that the Document the work of artists or illuminate their biographies. Cinema history u. a. are documented by press cuttings, posters, programs and other advertising media as well as film awards. In addition, there are collections on production facilities, especially the Babelsberg film studio, and on the history of cinemas in Germany.

Special space is given to bequests and closed collections, which are supplemented by an archive of interviews with contemporary witnesses. A video archive and a library are available for scientific purposes, as are films from personal estates and personal collections. The collection of cinematographic equipment is completed by written records on more than 450 companies. An extensive collection of patents enables insights into the development history of film and cinema technology. The collections are indexed according to personal names and film titles; there are also holdings listed alphabetically and numerically. Criteria for the organization of the technology collection result from the function of the devices (recording, playback and processing devices) as well as from the manufacturer's name.

Cinema organ

In the cinema there is a cinema organ that was built by the organ building company Michael Welte & Sons . The instrument was installed in the Luxor Palace in Chemnitz in 1929. The instrument has been revised several times since the 1950s. It was used until the late 1960s and dismantled in 1979 and handed over to the Potsdam Film Museum. 1992–1993 the instrument was restored by the organ building company Jehmlich (Dresden) and largely returned to its original condition. The instrument has 44 registers and three effect registers on multiplex box drawers (sound control by horseshoe magnets), which are housed in a soundproof sound chamber with a blind swell. The actions are electro-pneumatic. All rows of pipes can be played on all manuals.
