Final Fantasy XI (OT: Japanese フ ァ イ ナ ル フ ァ ン タ ジ ー XI , Fainaru Fantajī Irebun ) is part of the Final Fantasy series and for the first time in the series designed as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Final Fantasy XI has a consistently stable user base of over 500,000 players. As of late April 2009, there are 2 million active characters in Vana'diel .

As usual with some MMORPGs, Final Fantasy XI requires a monthly fee that can be increased through various actions (e.g. by applying for an additional content ID or to be able to play the Tetra Master card game online in the game itself ).

General

Final Fantasy XI does not have a predefined destination, but offers a variety of options to engage in the fantasy world of Vana'diel . In addition to the levels of professions, you can get to know the present and past Vana'diel better from its creation in missions (the main story) and quests. You can devote yourself to the manufacture of items in one of nine craft guilds or compete against other players in the two PvP events Ballista and Brenner . You can also raise your own chocobo from egg to adult chocobo and even race against other players. The possibilities in this game are almost unlimited, regular new updates (previously released expansions: Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan and Wings of the Goddess) provide innovations. A pure playing time of a year or longer is therefore possible.

Two special features compared to other games of the genre are the ability to bring all twenty professions to the maximum level with one character, as well as the necessity of working with other players, which is mandatory in large parts of the game, be it when leveling or completing quests and missions.

So far there are the four expansions Rise of the Zilart , Chains of Promathia , Treasures of Aht Urhgan and The Wings of the Goddess , which have not only brought new professions and areas, but also new missions. One of three other game expansions, Crystalline Memories , has been available in Europe since March 23, 2009. Another expansion, Mooglepiez im Mooglekiez , will be available from July 6, 2009, but will only be available with a PlayOnline update at the end of July 2009. In addition, The Shantotto Schism was published on November 11th, 2009, which, like the other two expansions, contains new story elements, quests and cards.

Final Fantasy XI first appeared in Japan for the PlayStation 2 . As for the game, the published never been to Europe 40 gigabytes - hard drive is required to dispense had to Europeans on the PlayStation 2 version. Final Fantasy XI is one of 16 so far ( Final Fantasy III , Final Fantasy IV , Final Fantasy V , Final Fantasy VI , Final Fantasy VII , Final Fantasy VIII , Final Fantasy IX , Final Fantasy X , Final Fantasy X-2 , Final Fantasy XI , Final Fantasy XII , Final Fantasy XIII , Final Fantasy XIII-2 , Lightning Returns: FINAL FANTASY XIII , Final Fantasy XIV , Final Fantasy XV ) Main series Final Fantasy titles that have also been released for Windows PCs (as of May 19, 2020) . PlayStation-2, Xbox-360 and Windows users can play together on the same servers. The Xbox 360 version was released on April 20, 2006. The game can be played in English, Japanese, German and French. For the Japanese version, however, you need the Japanese game. There are no servers for special languages, players from all over the world play on the same servers, so Japanese, Americans, Europeans and everyone else can meet again and again.

On July 8, 2014, the option to play the game in German and French was removed. The game is still available in English and Japanese. In March 2015 it was announced that support for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions would end at the end of March 2016. As of March 31, 2016, the game can no longer be started on these platforms, but Square Enix offers a free transfer of the game to PC.

Gameplay

Races

The player creates a character from one of the five races, which differ in the balance of their status values, such as speed, strength, etc.

  • Mithra : Cat-like creatures that are only represented as females in Vana'diel . Your values are designed for speed and accuracy.
  • Hume : People who are most widely found in Vana'diel . They are very versatile as all of their values are very balanced.
  • Elvaan : Tall , slender creatures with protruding pointy ears. Elvaan have high vitality and have a mental advantage over other races.
  • Galka : The muscular, bear-like creatures that live with the Humes. They are known for their tremendous physical strength.
  • Tarutaru : dwarf creatures native to the southwest. Tarutaru have a childlike appearance and reach the Hume just above the knees. They are mentally superior to all other races.

Nations

At the beginning of the game, the player decides for which nation he wants to start the adventure:

The Republic of Bastok : The youngest city is located in the southern part of the central continent "Quon". Your form of government is a democracy. The president, who is elected every year by the people, takes the leading role in government. The city was once founded by miners. The mines were quickly exhausted, but Bastok was able to advance their technology in the years of their economic rise. This is how their scientific curiosity gave birth to the airships .

The Kingdom of San d'Oria : The proud kingdom of the Elvaan, which lies on the northern part of the “Quon” continent, was once rebuilt after a brutal civil war. The kingdom has been run by an existing noble family for over 500 years. The kingdom is protected by two orders of knights, the Royal Guard and the Temple Knights.

The Windurst Federation : Located in the south of the western continent "Mindartia", the Federation consists of the five heads of the Tarutaru ministries. With the help of the prophecies of the chief, the Star Sibyl, they run their ministries and so together the people of Windurst. The Mithra are also based in Windurst. They are originally from the jungle village of Kazham.

The player can move up to Rank 10 in his nation. The higher the rank, the more history-heavy and challenging the mission.

Nations that the player cannot choose are the “Grand Duchy of Jeuno” and “The Empire of Aht Urhgan”. With the latter, the player can register as a mercenary as soon as he enters the realm in order to take on history-related missions there.

jobs

Final Fantasy XI has 20 different professions (jobs), most of which were already present in other Final Fantasy parts. At the beginning the player chooses between 6 professions.

  • Warrior : An armorer who can use all common weapons. Can wear heavy armor and shields.
  • White Mages : Healing wizards who use magic to cure and protect companions.
  • Black Mage : The equivalent of healing wizards. Black magicians make use of the elements of nature and inflict heavy damage on enemies with their attack spells.
  • Red Mage : With shield and sword in hand, red mages use the spells of a white and black mage. Red magicians are often referred to as all-rounders, as they are also very skilled in sword fighting.
  • Thief : Agile fighters who ambush enemies. Have the ability to steal from enemies for their money and items.
  • Monk : Fearless battle monks who use their physical strength to the max. Alone they rely on their fist fighting skills.

As soon as the player reaches level 30 with one of the first 6 professions, he has the remaining 14 professions to choose from, which however require a successful completion of a task. At any time, the player is free to change his occupation as often as he likes and without any loss.

  • Paladin : Warriors who have mastered both martial arts and white magic. They mostly pick up the opponent's attack for the Companions, as they have the best defense of all jobs.
  • Dark Knight : The opposite of the Paladin. They are excellent fighters, but they also have black magic. They do very high damage but have very little defense.
  • Bard : These minstrels are the best supporters in the game. With their songs, they can strengthen the group in many ways, such as: B. increase the attack of the group, or regenerate the MP.
  • Hunter : The hunters specialize in long-range combat. They can carry melee weapons, but it's not worth it because their ranged weapons are clearly stronger. The problem with this job, however, is that the hunter cannot take a lot and dies so often in a group.
  • Beast tamers : The beast tamers are very close to nature, so they even have the gift of talking to animals and controlling them.
  • Summoners (*) : Mages who perform the forbidden arts of conjuring and let powerful beings fight by their side.
  • Dragoon (*) : The Dragooners fight with wyverns at their side against the bad guys of Vana'diel. Your wyvern can even heal the dragooner (depending on the support job).
  • Ninja (*) : Hard training in the forbidden arts of the Far East have turned the ninjas into ice-cold killers.
  • Samurai (*) : These soloists have mastered the martial arts of the Far East like no other.
  • Blue Magician (**) : These mysterious elite soldiers of Aht Uhrgan's learn their magic from their opponents.
  • Buccaneers (**) : these pirate descendants never leave the house without their rifles. They use the luck of the Altana to strengthen their companions.
  • Puppet master (**) : These wandering artists entertain their audience with their automat. But you shouldn't underestimate this doll.
  • Scholar (***) : You were of great help in the Crystal War back then. With knowledge of white and black magic, they are of great help even today.
  • Dancer (***) : During the Crystal War, the dancers were useful through their healing dances.

(*) = The addon "Rise of the Zilart" is required to activate these jobs. (**) = The addon "Treasures of Aht Urhgan" is required to activate these jobs. (***) = The add-on "The Wings of the Goddess" is required to unlock these jobs.
