Arriving train

The subway runs here, although only since the early 1940s, but the station was already more than seventy years earlier than the station built a suburban railway. The station building still has numerous architectural features from the Victorian era . In addition to Mill Hill East , Finchley Central is one of the oldest remaining parts of the London Underground.

The main entrance, which leads directly into the counter hall, is on Chaville Way, which ends at a car park. The side entrance is on Station Road, a few meters from Regent's Park Road. The station has three tracks: all trains going south stop at track 3, and those going to High Barnet stop at track 2 . Platform 1 is used by trains going to Mill Hill East and those turning into Finchley Central.

history

Station building

The station was opened on August 22, 1867 by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway (EH&LR) together with the single-track line Finsbury Park - Edgware . In July 1867, just before opening, the larger Great Northern Railway (GNR) took over EH&LR. The branch line towards High Barnet followed on April 1, 1872. At the beginning the station was called Finchley & Hendon , on February 1, 1894 it was named Finchley (Church End) .

With the Railways Act 1921 , all railway companies in the country were combined into four large companies, the GNR in 1923 in the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). As part of the Northern Heights project, the rail lines to Edgware and High Barnet were integrated into the subway network. The last LNER train ran on April 1, 1940 and the station was given its current name. The underground service began on April 14, 1940. On May 18, 1941, the short branch line to Mill Hill East followed.

Harry Beck , the designer of the London Underground route network , once lived near the station . A memorial plaque on the platform reminds of this.
