Finger Lakes location

The Finger Lakes (Eng. "Fingerseen") are a group of lakes in the north of the American state of New York .

They got their name from the elongated shape and north-south orientation that are characteristic of all eleven lakes. For example, Cayuga Lake , the largest of the lake group, is around 65 km long, but at its widest point is only around 5 km wide. The Finger Lakes were created during the last Ice Age , when huge glacier tongues carved into the subsurface where the lakes are today .

The finger lakes include the following eleven lakes in the narrower sense (from east to west):

The Oneida Lake northeast of Syracuse is sometimes counted as a "thumb" to the Finger Lakes. The Onondaga Lake is located north of the Finger Lakes, but is not counted among them. There are also numerous smaller lakes in the region, including Silver Lake, Waneta Lake, and Lamoka Lake.

From Canandaigua Lake, all lakes are drained via the Seneca River , which flows into Lake Ontario via the Oswego River . The four western lakes, on the other hand, are connected to Lake Ontario via the Genesee River .

Viticulture

Wine has been grown in the Finger Lakes region since 1839. In 2010, the area where both white and red wines are grown was the largest wine-growing area in New York State and the second largest in the United States after California . The well-known American Viticultural Area (AVA) designated wine-growing areas include a. Seneca Lake AVA and Cayuga Lake AVA .
